The son of Smart Missile was only having his second race start at Bathurst last Monday. He was also steered by jockey Rachael Murray from barrier 4 on the Heavy 9 surface. After jumping well he was caught wide early as horses improved to his inside. Murray was forced to take a sit and settle at the tail of the field. Rounding the home turn the tear away leader ‘The Veal Thing’ kicked clear in the straight. Malkara was forced to round up the field and come down the outside of the track. Malkara showed an impressive turn of foot on the heavy track and won by 3/4Ls being eased down over the line.
Michael’s Comments: “It was a great effort by Malkara. The video replays show that no other horse made ground where he was on the track. He backed up after having his first start only eight days prior to run on a Heavy 9 and also managed to overcome the tough run in transit. He is not the biggest horse in the stable but he is very competitive and has a decent stride length for his size. He will be better suited once he is over further next preparation.”
